Located south of the Hải Vân Pass, between the mountains and the sea, Vân Village once stood almost entirely isolated from the rest of Đà Nẵng. Beginning in 1968, people with leprosy settled there, and for decades, the area was known as a “leper village.” These residents were separated from society by both the stigma surrounding the disease and the difficult terrain of the village, which also happened to possess a rare, pristine natural beauty.

Following its official recognition as an administrative unit of Đà Nẵng in 1997, the village gradually attracted visitors drawn to its picturesque scenery. However, this growing attention eventually transformed the secluded enclave into the site of a controversial megaproject, stirring public debate and raising significant concerns regarding its ecological impact in Việt Nam just over two decades later.
