At its peak, Threads saw millions of posts on certain days related to the keywords “Hải Vân Pass” and “Làng Vân,” with many drawing substantial engagement.
This episode became a notable phenomenon in public discourse, revealing how political and social issues are debated in Việt Nam today.
However, this intense public scrutiny was met with a wave of post removals and sweeps on Threads. Numerous users speculated that a coordinated force was actively “hunting down” and “reporting” these posts.
Consequently, a dedicated effort was made to collect and preserve the most prominent opinions expressed during this debate.
Due to space limitations, only widely circulated posts from the second half of July 2026 were examined, with a primary focus on the dominant sentiment: opposition to the project. These posts were categorized based on the main public concerns. Additional high-engagement posts lacking a distinct argument were placed in an “Other Views” section. A small survey was also conducted to monitor the organized campaign to delete Threads posts concerning the Vân Village project.
Reports indicate that the campaign to suppress posts remains active. Hence, some of the content cited below may already be deleted or hidden.
This suppression is a troubling development for public discourse in Việt Nam and serves as a warning about attempts to interfere with the right to free expression. By documenting these events, we preserve a memorable era in Việt Nam’s social media discourse. Despite significant obstacles, many citizens, particularly the youth, made efforts to speak out and assert their determination to engage in major national discussions.
The Wave of Opposition
Public opposition to the construction project online stemmed from various issues. An analysis of the online posts reveals seven main areas of concern:
- Ecological and environmental concerns
- Historical and cultural concerns
- National security and defense implications
- The lack of project transparency
- The conduct of the company
- The conduct of the authorities and state media

The Crackdown on Public Discourse
During the summer of 2026, stark images revealing a rubble-strewn Hải Vân Pass—historically revered as “the most majestic pass under heaven”—ignited a wave of opposition on Threads. Thousands of users, primarily young people, openly debated and directly challenged a development project fraught with public concerns.
Engagement reportedly surged into the millions on certain days before posts began to disappear. Numerous users found their content deleted or hidden, accompanied only by a vague notice from Threads: “This post may contain material that infringes someone else’s copyright.”
The platform never specified the alleged copyright holder. Suspiciously, these mass removals coincided exactly with the peak of the Vân Village controversy.
Whether these posts actually constituted copyright infringement remains debatable, and many users denied the accusations. In defiance, a significant number of individuals repeatedly republished the removed material. To evade the automated sweeps, users adapted by abandoning the keywords “Làng Vân,” “Vingroup,” and “Hải Vân Pass” in favor of coded terms. This tactic successfully drove the discussion volume back into the millions.
Typically, social media platforms obscure content due to automated violation detections, user reports, or authoritative requests. However, this specific and aggressive wave of takedowns led the public to heavily suspect that Vinpearl, the Vingroup subsidiary developing the Vân Village project, was influencing the censorship.
Documented evidence of this organized campaign to suppress Vân Village content has been archived. This includes screenshots of the vague copyright notices issued by Threads, alongside posts from users expressing outrage over the platform’s heavy-handed moderation.
This archive serves as a reminder of a relentless crackdown on public discourse, triggered entirely by citizens voicing dissent over the unwanted transformation of a cherished landscape.
The debate over Vân Village may eventually fade into silence, and the widely condemned project may still proceed regardless.
Some may argue that the forests, beaches, and mountainsides at the foot of Hải Vân Pass have already disappeared. However, the legacy of this public outcry is not just about whether speaking out affects immediate change.
Most importantly, a massive demographic—particularly the youth—dared to raise their critical voices. Leveraging social media, they shared information, posed difficult questions, and debated the necessary balance between economic development and environmental conservation.
Regardless of where one stands on the issue, these individuals sparked one of the liveliest public debates Việt Nam has witnessed in years.
