With a 100% approval rate once again, Nguyễn Huy Tiến, who boasts more than 38 years of experience in the sector, was re-elected to the highest position in the prosecutorial system.

Following the timeline: On the afternoon of April 7, the National Assembly elected Nguyễn Huy Tiến as Procurator General of the Supreme People’s Procuracy by secret ballot. He received 100% of the votes from the 474 attending deputies.

Political profile: Beginning as a district-level prosecutor at the age of 20, Nguyễn Huy Tiến has confined his entire career to the procuracy sector, advancing through various provincial and central-level positions.

  • His roles have spanned different provinces and cities, including Deputy Head of a Department in the Thái Bình Provincial Procuracy (September 1995 – February 2001), Procurator General of the Quảng Bình Provincial Procuracy (June 2013 – May 2015), and Procurator General of the High-Level Procuracy in Hà Nội (June 2015 – April 2017).
  • From May 2017, he moved to serve as a senior prosecutor and department director at the Supreme People’s Procuracy.
  • He was first elected as Procurator General of the Supreme People’s Procuracy during an extraordinary session of the National Assembly in August 2024.

Context: During the 15th National Assembly (2021–2026 term), two individuals took the oath of office for this position. Lê Minh Trí was re-elected at the beginning of the term but was unexpectedly reassigned as Chief Justice of the Supreme People’s Court in August 2024, leading to Nguyễn Huy Tiến succeeding him.

Censorship: The public was unable to follow the election process for the Procurator General or other new-term state leaders, as the first session of the 16th National Assembly was broadcast live solely for the opening session, closing session, and oath-taking ceremonies.
