A National Assembly committee claims a 99.9% success rate in resolving public complaints, despite protests from residents across Việt Nam who are losing their land to megaprojects.

The Latest: Ahead of the National Assembly session convening on Oct. 17, the Committee on People’s Aspirations and Supervision has presented a draft report on citizens’ concerns.

  • Notably, the report does not mention a single petition regarding land recovery, compensation, or resettlement.

The Details: On Oct. 12, the National Assembly Standing Committee met to hear the Committee on People’s Aspirations and Supervision present reports on petitions, complaints, and denunciations from the public.

  • The meeting served as preparation for the National Assembly session expected to open this weekend.

Summarizing the National Assembly’s work on public petitions in September 2026, committee chair Lê Thị Nga stated that citizens “trust the leadership of the Party and the State, express enthusiasm, and highly value the activities of the National Assembly and the Government in recent times […].”

  • On the topic of  complaints and denunciations, Nga stressed that 854 of the 855 petitions received through meetings with voters had been resolved, a rate of 99.9%.

At the meeting, Standing Committee members “approved and highly valued” the reports.

  • They stated that the documents were “carefully prepared, with specific supporting data, reflecting relatively comprehensively the results achieved, and true to the thoughts and aspirations of voters and the people.”

Finally, the Standing Committee asked the agencies in charge to “emphasize achievements in promoting the tradition of great national unity and social consensus” in the petition reports.

About the Committee: The Committee on People’s Aspirations and Supervision is the National Assembly body that receives citizens and handles their complaints, denunciations, petitions, and feedback.

  • It serves as the main channel for hearing people’s concerns and bringing them before the National Assembly.

Reality on the Ground: Residents in many localities are speaking out forcefully in many ways against forced land recovery, as well as against inadequate compensation and resettlement for megaprojects.

  • These localities include Hồng Hà, Lĩnh Nam, Ba Vì, Gia Bình, and Vĩnh Hưng.
  • However, the media and state agencies rarely report or reflect these concerns.
