After years out of public view, rumors about an unacknowledged son of Hồ Chí Minh have resurfaced and spread widely on social media.
The Latest: Reports circulated by online users claim that Trung, who also went by the names Vũ Tất Trung and Nguyễn Tất Trung, passed away on June 16.
State media outlets have remained silent regarding the rumor of his death, and Luật khoa reporters have been unable to verify this information.
Social Media Reactions: Following the news of his reported death, numerous social media users expressed sympathy for what they described as Trung’s “unfortunate life” and “lack of official recognition.”
On June 17, Colonel Trần Nhung, the former head of the international news editing division at Nhân Dân newspaper (People’s Army Newspaper), wrote on his personal Facebook page that he was saddened by the news.
- Nhung stated that during a in 2001 interview with Vũ Kỳ—the former secretary to Hồ Chí Minh who adopted Trung—, Kỳ “explained why Trung was named Nguyễn Tất Trung.”
- However, Nhung noted that this specific detail was “cut when the article was published.”
- He further urged “everyone not to make baseless speculative comments.”
On June 18, Nguyễn Hải Trang, the son of former Hà Nội Party chief Nguyễn Thọ Chân, posted on his personal Facebook page, “I knew Trung since middle school. He was Vũ Kỳ’s adopted son. For years, we children saw that on holidays, on Uncle Hồ’s birthday and his death anniversary, Vũ Kỳ would make Trung go to the Mausoleum to pay respects to our Uncle. We suspected that he was our Uncle Hồ’s son. […] Some time later, my father confirmed to me: ‘Trung really is Uncle Hồ’s son.’”
- Nguyễn Hải Trang has since locked the post.
Conversely, the social media account Thuy Hung, known for publishing pro-government content, argued against these claims.
- The account stated that the rumors regarding ông Vũ Trung lack convincing evidence and “demean Uncle Hồ’s reputation and dignity.”
To date, there is no official state source confirming or denying any biological relationship between Vũ Trung and Hồ Chí Minh.
The Background: While rumors are typically excluded from official reporting, the claims that Vũ Trung was the son of Hồ Chí Minh and Nông Thị Xuân have circulated for years and have been affirmed by several credible sources.
Public awareness of the case expanded after the 1997 overseas publication of Vũ Thư Hiên’s memoir, Đêm giữa ban ngày.
In Chapter 34, Hiên recounted statements made by Nguyễn Tạo, a former deputy director-general of the Public Security Department: “Ms. Xuân was very much favored by Uncle Hồ. They had a son together, named Trung, Nguyễn Tất Trung. Later, before Uncle Hồ died, he entrusted Trung to Vũ Kỳ to care for as an adopted son…”
- Vũ Thư Hiên is the son of Vũ Kỳ, who served for decades as the secretary to Hồ Chí Minh.
In the well-known 2000 book, Ho Chi Minh: A Life, by historian William J. Duiker. Duiker wrote: “With her attractive appearance, Xuân soon caught the attention of the aging president, who arranged for her to serve as his personal nurse. Eventually, she bore him a son, who was later adopted by Hồ’s personal secretary, Vu Ky.” (pp. 505–506).
Additional corroboration comes from a 2019 video interview published by the YouTube channel VFC, featuring Nguyễn Minh Cần, former deputy chairman of the Hà Nội Administrative Committee.
- Cần stated that rumors concerning the relationship between Hồ Chí Minh and Nông Thị Xuân, as well as their son Nguyễn Tất Trung, had previously appeared in a 1996 article in the newspaper Người Sài Gòn.
- Cần noted that in February 1957, he received information about an accident involving a woman on the Nhật Tân bridge. However, it was not until a meeting with Vũ Thư Hiên in July 1973 that he learned the deceased woman was Nông Thị Xuân.
- Cần added that Xuân had earlier “given birth to a child for Uncle Hồ.”
In September 2021, writer Nông Đức Tiềm of Tiếng Dân published a report concerning Vũ Trung. Tiềm included a letter from Nguyễn Thị Tình, the former director of the Hồ Chí Minh Museum, addressed to her superiors.
- The letter referenced “a story related to the life of President Hồ Chí Minh” that Vũ Kỳ had recounted, though the document did not specify the exact contents of the story.
Why It Matters: The ongoing circulation of these rumors highlights a gap between official state historical narratives and independent historical accounts regarding the private life of the nation’s founding leader.
Former Secretary General Nông Đức Mạnh was also rumored to be the son of Hồ Chí Minh, a claim Mạnh officially denied in the early 2000s. Both Mạnh and Nông Thị Xuân belong to the Tày ethnic minority group.
